What You Need to Know about Iron Deficiency

Many people do not realize they lack iron. According to World Health Organization, iron deficiency is the most common type of micronutrient disorder in the world.  More than two billion people, 30% of the world’s population, suffer from anemia, a condition characterized by low levels of iron.

Iron is important in the production of hemoglobin, a protein responsible for transport and release of oxygen in the body. When iron is reduced, the ability of our body to absorb oxygen is altered, resulting to mild to serious health complications.

The World Health Organization is currently developing a program that helps communities tackle all the aspects of iron deficiency and anemia. They said that eating iron-rich diet and enhancing the body’s absorption of nutrients are only a few ways to combat this nutritional disorder.  

Eating a well-balanced diet is the best solution to prevent iron deficiency that can soon develop to anemia. You can also try food fortification and taking supplements as an alternative way to get nutrients.
