Potassium is the third most abundant mineral in our body. It is found within our cells and contains components for maintaining a well-balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.

Apart from acting as an electrolyte, this essential mineral is also important in muscle strength, nerve functioning, and cardiovascular system. Its role is so crucial that even a slight change in the levels of potassium in our bloodstream could lead to life-threatening illnesses.

Generally, our body suffers from potassium deficiency due to inadequate potassium intake through diet or certain health conditions that unknowingly stimulates your body to excrete more potassium. These situations and conditions include the following:

  • Low levels of magnesium and folic acid
  • Imbalanced level of sodium
  • Kidney failure and other kidney disorders
  • Illnesses that result in vomiting and diarrhea
  • Dehydrating
  • Diarrhea
  • Surgery
  • Anorexia
  • Bulimia
  • Excessive drinking of alcohol and diuretics
  • Imbalanced diet
  • Diabetes
  • Medications such as antibiotics, bronchodilators, steroids, or theophylline

Potassium deficiency can be characterized by fatigue, nausea, and constipation. When these symptoms occur, visit the nearest health center to have your potassium levels tested.

Eating a nutritious food is the best solution to prevent nutritional deficiency, but sometimes, taking supplements and other alternatives may be advisable. Bentonite clay is enriched with trace minerals such as potassium, iron, and magnesium. By mixing a tablespoon of bentonite clay with water, you create an instant drink that will replace the missing nutrients in your body.
