How Much Calorie Your Pets Need

Posted by Ruby Tequin on

Knowing how much to feed our pets is crucial as calorie requirements for animals is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor. Even when considering your four-legged pal's lifestyle, age, size, or breed, it is impossible to determine the exact number of calories our pets need. This is because animals have different metabolism rate which greatly affects the way their body consumes energy.

Veterinarians, on the other hand, use a standard equation to estimate your pet's caloric needs--and it solely depends on the cat/dog's weight. Here is a simple equation you can follow:

Daily Calorie Needs= 30 x (You Pet's Weight in Kilograms) + 70

Take note that this equation only estimates your pet's caloric needs. For instance, if your cat weighs 10 lbs, he or she needs at least 180 calories to 200 calories per day. Feed that number of calories, monitor your pet's condition and adjust accordingly.

If you are still confused or skeptical about this DIY equation, you can visit World Small Animal Veterinary Association’s (WSAVA) Global Nutrition Committee for references.
