How Much Calcium Do You Need?

Calcium is an essential mineral necessary for our body to function well. It is significant in bone formulation, and other functions in the heart, blood, and muscle. A slight change in the levels of calcium in our body could lead to calcium imbalance. It could also escalate to various bone-related medical conditions including osteoporosis, rickets, and osteomalacia.

The Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) develops Dietary References Intakes (DRI) for calcium and other nutrients. DRI is a set of reference values that recommends a certain amount of nutrient an individual can take to stay healthy. Below is a set of recommended dietary allowance for the amounts of calcium required for bone health:

As we get older, our body’s ability to absorb calcium changes. This is why it’s important to keep our bones strong and healthy while we’re still young. Although a balanced diet is the best way to get calcium, supplements is also another option.
