Difference Between Sodium and Calcium Bentonite Clay

Bentonite clay, also known as a healing clay, is formed from ashes spewed out from volcanoes. As it gets exposed to sea waters, it absorbs its minerals and became a highly energized clay rich in nutrients.

Throughout the years, this healing clay has been used in many parts of the world because of its cosmetic and health benefits. It has detoxifying agents that can get rid of many types of impurities.

Also referred to as montmorillonite clay, bentonite clay is classified under the smectite group--a clay family known for its capacity to expand. It comes in many forms--sodium, calcium, magnesium, and potassium--but the two most common are sodium and calcium bentonite clay. Here are some facts you need to know:

  • Both sodium and calcium bentonite clays are edible, as long as it is food graded.
  • Edible bentonite clays should undergo thorough testing.
  • Sodium and calcium bentonite clay are ideal for internal and external use.
  • Sodium bentonite clay is a better electrical conductor, which means it can attract more positively charged toxins than calcium bentonite can.
  • Calcium bentonite contains exchangeable ions. For instance, you can convert calcium bentonite clay into a sodium bentonite by simply adding a small amount of salt.
  • Both clays can expand when hydrated.
