Are You Taking Too Much Sodium?

Majority of the Americans eat foods from fast food chains and restaurants. Since these foods were pre-made, we are not aware of how much salt and other additives our food contains.  

You can keep your sodium in check by checking the product’s nutrition label every time you’re making a purchase. The label indicates the amount of sodium per serving as well as the sodium from salt and any other sodium-containing ingredient in the product.

Here’s how much sodium a specific amount of salt contains:

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt = 575 mg sodium
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt = 1,150 mg sodium
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt = 1,725 mg sodium
  • 1 teaspoon salt = 2,300 mg sodium

In a world where everything is processed and pre-made, monitoring our sodium intake can be challenging. So it is important to check the product label when purchasing ready-to-eat meals and prepackaged food products in the supermarket.

But do not overdo it. Getting too little sodium can wreak havoc your body. Eat sodium-rich foods and take supplements, if needed.
