Palo Santo, or “Holy Wood,” is a tree which is native to Ecuador. This oil has been used for centuries by the natives in South America as a spiritual remedy for purifying and cleansing and to dispel evil spirits, misfortune and calamity.
It is said that the true value of this tree comes after its life, of up to 90 years because, the tree does not release its essence, or essential oil, until is has lain on the ground for 4-10 years after having died of natural causes. At this point the tree gives freely of its essential essences.

Aged heartwood (the center or core) is rich in essential oils such as limonene and alpha-pinene which have been shown to be chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic against several types of cancer. It has been found to be antitumoral, antibacterial, antiviral, helpful for sciatic pain, and assists with bone healing. In medical aromatherapy this oil has shown to be effective to counteract panic attacks and anxiety, as a respiratory remedy for cough, colds, and asthma, for headaches and migraines, and in massage therapy for pain and inflammation of the muscles and joints. In spiritual aromatherapy it can be beneficial for meditation, concentration, and for enhancing creativity and learning.
What a blessing that in its putrefaction, the Palo Santo tree provides medicine; hence, increased life is the outcome of its death.
