Skin Conditions and Calcium Bentonite Clay – Part 2

In part one of this two part post, itchy skin conditions are defined. In addition, two categories of triggers – allergens and irritants – were identified.  Part 2 of this post suggests non-medical approaches to addressing chronic skin conditions that cause itching and are otherwise generally unpleasant.

To recap part one, allergies are the body’s way of saying “I’m toxic.”  Eczema and psoriasis are two chronic skin conditions that indicate the presence of a toxic condition. The toxemia often appears as a dermatitis or inflammation of the skin. Allergens, irritants and infections are the most common triggers that create the toxic condition and ensuing rash and itchy skin.

The Solutions

Detoxification With Bentonite Clay

The best way to rid the body of a toxic condition is to undergo a safe detoxification process. This in essence gets at the root of the problem and goes beyond treating symptoms. There are many detoxification programs available today, including some that are safe for children. One such program is the use of calcium bentonite clay either internally or externally.

Calcium bentonite clay is a mineral compound comprised of negatively-charged ions. Once hydrated for drinking – typically in a ratio of 1 part clay to 8 parts water – it travels through the body and attracts positive ions to itself.  Toxins, parasites, foreign substances, fungi, noxious bacteria – are comprised of positively charged ions, hence the ability of clay to attract and remove them.  Another way to detox with clay is to add it to a bath. Since the skin is the largest organ of the body, exposing it to clay externally is another effective way to pull toxins out.

The picture below shows the left foot treated with Earth’s Natural®’s Psoriasisn’t over a period of two weeks.  Psoriasisn’t is one of our therapeutic calcium bentonite clay muds with an essential oil blend of geranium, clary sage, lavender and grapefruit in a castor oil base. These specific essential oils are known for their ability to address skin conditions.

Drinking Calcium Bentonite Clay

Adults and children over 50 pounds may start by drinking 1 ounce of clay daily (after mixed in the 1:8 ratio) for a week and then add an additional ounce to their daily routine. Some calcium bentonite clays are safe for children and many people have even used it on infants with good results. The same hydrated clay (1:8 clay to water) for adults can be consumed by children in smaller amounts. For children less than 50 pounds, give 1 tsp of hydrated clay daily. It can also be added to smoothies and other foods.  Our blog has several recipes that incorporate clay into them. Not all clays on the market are suitable for internal use so BE SURE TO CHECK WITH YOUR CLAY SELLER THAT THEY RECOMMEND INTERNAL USE.

Clay Baths for Adults and Children

Clay baths can be used by both adults and children to detoxify, cleanse and restore. The skin is our body’s largest organ. Immersing the body in a clay bath removes toxins through the skin. Many people experience immediate relief from itching as soon as they hit the tub and for some time afterwards, depending on the condition. Others have had psoriasis scales be almost completely removed after only one bath. Only 8 ounces of clay is needed for a clay bath for adults. Specific guidelines on use of clay baths for children can be found here.

Food

Now more than ever, it is important that whenever possible, organic food be the preference. Traditionally grown food not only lacks important minerals and micronutrients, but are often laced with pesticides that our bodies cannot tolerate. This includes not only produce, but animal products as well. Fortunately the organic food movement has exploded and as a result, organic food options are more commonplace and prices are falling, albeit slowly. Many justify the added expense of organic food by looking at it as a form of health insurance!

Water

Where well water was once a safe bet, it is now suspect due to assaults to the environment.  In many areas of the country, water tables have become polluted with toxins.  This includes pesticides used in large scale crop farming as well as factory farms. In large metropolitan areas, municipal water districts add toxic chemicals to the water supply in an attempt to kill naturally occurring pathogens, merely substituting one noxious element for another. For these reasons, purified water is a necessity. Removing the poisons before they enter the body via drinking or bathing is crucial to minimizing reactions by the body.

What Are You Waiting For?

There are two types of people that use calcium bentonite clay to treat their itchy, chronic skin conditions:
